The Miami Dolphins already used the post-NFL draft free-agent market to improve their roster with the Odell Beckham Jr. signing.
The Dolphins could be more active on the free-agent market to fill out the defensive holes on their depth chart ahead of training camp.
Miami addressed its pass-rushing need in the draft, so it is probably set there, even with Bradley Chubb and Jaelan Phillips coming off season-ending leg injuries.
Miami’s help could come in the secondary, where it trimmed the depth chart because of its exorbitant salary cap number entering the offseason.
There are plenty of veteran secondary players still on the market who could add depth to the Dolphins roster behind Jordan Poyer, Jevon Holland and Jalen Ramsay.
The Dolphins already landed one member of the Buffalo Bills’ long-time safety duo in the offseason with Poyer’s signing.
They could reunite Poyer and Micah Hyde to shore up the secondary in the second wave of free agency.
The Dolphins already have Holland to start next to Poyer, so Hyde would not be guaranteed a starting spot.
However, he would receive the chance to play alongside his long-time teammate for at least another year and be on a contending roster in 2024.
Hyde could serve as the third safety, as long as the Dolphins could find a way to sign him to an inexpensive deal that would not kill the team’s salary cap situation.
The Dolphins only have a few million in cap space left to work with.
You could pick out a handful of free-agent veteran safeties who could be good fits to shore up the back end of the Miami defense.
Eddie Jackson fits that billing and he may be motivated to play in his home state after spending all of his career with the Chicago Bears.
The Lauderdale Lakes, Florida native would be an intriguing fit alongside Poyer and Holland in a secondary that has the potential to be really good with Ramsey and Kendall Fuller on the outside.
Jackson is probably holding out to see which starting jobs become available over the next few months, but returning home to play for a contender would be a solid alternative if that does not come to fruition.
