He did so ahead of the 2023 season under the proviso that he and the team would be able to work out a long-term contract, however that hasn’t been the case to this point.
Barkley earned a lot of respect for playing a season under the tag, worth around $10.1 million in annual salary for a running back, without even sitting out a single practice.
Some may ask why this should be commended? Well, often a franchise tagged player will opt to holdout until either a trade happens or a new long-term contract is agreed.
What is the franchise tag?
In the salary cap era, teams are allowed to be protected against a player leaving for free agency in the offseason.
They are allowed to place one player under a franchise tag per offseason, and that player must be an unrestricted free agent in that same offseason.
The player is automatically tagged with a one-year contract in which he is paid no less than the average of the top-five highest paid players in his position across the league.
However, players don’t like playing under the franchise tag because there is no protection for them in case they suffer a serious injury.
The guaranteed money is minimal compared to what they would receive by signing a long-term deal.
This is why some individuals often sit out a year under the tag, not willing to risk their health for such a short-term deal.
