Kansas City Chiefs’ key player has been ruled out due to serious injury
The Kansas City Chiefs have placed wide receiver Mecole Hardman on injured reserve and ruled out wide receiver Kadarius Toney against the Las Vegas Raiders.
The Kansas City Chiefs’ wide receivers have been a huge topic for the team’s failing offense all season, and they’re now down two of their most dangerous playmakers from an already-thin group.
The Chiefs placed wide receiver Mecole Hardman on injured reserve with a thumb sprain and declared wide receiver Kadarius Toney out of Sunday’s game against the Las Vegas Raiders, despite the fact that he practiced fully all week.
The unexpected injury update for Kadarius Toney
According to Matt Derrick of Chiefs Digest, Toney was on the Chiefs’ injury report with an ankle condition, but a hip concern was added on Saturday. Derrick later claimed that Toney “developed some discomfort in his hip during practice Friday” that persisted into Saturday morning.
The extent of Mecole Hardman’s damage
Hardman’s placement on injured reserve is rather surprising given that he returned to the game after departing against the Philadelphia Eagles on Monday Night Football. He never returned punts after his injury, instead relying on the now-retired Toney.
On Friday, head coach Andy Reid was asked if Hardman’s injury could keep him out more than just one week.
“There’s a chance.” Reid said. “We’re just getting it double-checked here. There’s a chance.”
Hardman will now be out a minimum of four games.
Kansas City’s corresponding roster moves
Wide receiver Richie James was activated off injured reserve last week but was a healthy scratch on gameday. The Chiefs will likely have him return to the field in Vegas, but they also made two practice squad elevations on Saturday.
In light of the loss of running back Jerick McKinnon and both receiving injuries, the Chiefs elevated running back La’Mical Perine and wide out Montrell Washington.
During his first tenure on the Chiefs’ active roster, Washington was a reliable punt returner, returning eight punts for 61 yards and one kickoff for 20 yards. He didn’t play any offensive snaps.
Perine played one carry for one yard in lieu of running back Clyde-Edwards Helaire during the Chiefs’ game against the Miami Dolphins in Germany.
