GOOD NEWS: The Cardinals are bringing him back

Spring training is upon us, and St. Louis is cautiously monitoring several injuries.

One young St. Louis Cardinals outfielder is still working his way back after surgery.

Dylan Carlson, a Cardinals outfielder, missed much of the 2023 season due to injury, appearing in only 76 games. Carlson had a terrible year, hitting five home runs, driving in 27 runs, and slashing.219/.318/.333.

Carlson was mentioned in trade rumors last season and during the winter, but he remains with the team and is anticipated to play a significant part in 2024 as the club’s fourth outfielder.

The 25-year-old had ankle surgery in September and is still working his way back. He was cleared in December but will be limited in Spring Training, according to MLB.com’s John Denton.

“Cardinals (center fielder) Tommy Edman will miss the first full team workout because of a stomach bug, Oli Marmol said,” Denton said in a statement. “Dylan Carlson (ankle surgery) has restricted running ability, while Brendan Donovan (elbow surgery) will have his throwing watched. Donovan is most likely to remain at second base for the time being.

The fact that he is able to participate at all is a good indication, and the club is probably just taking measures after Carlson missed time.
