Domi’s Grit and Talent with Maple Leafs Leads to Contract Extension Negotiation…
The Toronto Maple Leafs are reportedly nearing a four-year contract extension with forward Max Domi, according to Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman. The deal is expected to be just under $16 million in total, averaging $4 million per year.
Domi, who was set to become an unrestricted free agent on Monday, will be under contract until 2028, reaching his age-32 season with this extension.
Max Domi, son of former Leafs’ first-round pick and notable enforcer Tie Domi, hit his stride late in the season, scoring 16 points in the final 19 regular-season games and adding four points in seven playoff games. His scoring surge came while playing on the top line with superstar Auston Matthews, forming a dynamic duo of grit and talent that Toronto is eager to keep together next season.
Max Domi quickly made an impact in his first year wearing his dad’s old logo, joining Toronto on a one-year, $3 million contract nearly a year ago. However, he may still have untapped potential.
He has consistently been a top-level scorer, with 20 goals and 56 points in 80 games between the Chicago Blackhawks and Dallas Stars in the 2022-23 season, and a career-high of 28 goals and 72 points in 2018-19. These achievements were often made when Domi played more prominent roles, showcasing his puck skills and shooting ability.
With the Leafs, Domi adapted to a grittier style, supporting the stars rather than being one himself. This dynamic could change if he secures a top-line position next season, potentially leading to a breakout season that would justify his extension and provide Toronto with the high-scoring, versatile winger they’ve been seeking.
