If there’s one constant each year, it’s that the Leafs are always active when the free agent market opens.

They consistently rank among the most active teams, and 2024 was no different, with Toronto signing Chris Tanev, Oliver Ekman-Larsson, Jani Hakanpää, and Anthony Stolarz.

Additionally, the team extended Max Domi’s contract less than 24 hours before the free agent market opened.

The signings are certainly intriguing. First, Tanev (34) signed a six-year contract, which will take him to age 40. While he’s a defensive defenseman who fits well with what the Leafs need, the duration raises questions.

Then there’s Oliver Ekman-Larsson, who is also no longer in his prime. Lastly, Hakanpää, a six-foot-seven player who seems like a solid signing on paper (2 years/$3 million), comes with the risk that he might never play hockey again.

These observations were made by Steve Simmons in an article published in the Toronto Sun.
