With the opening of free agency now behind him, Jeff Jackson’s next pressing task is finding a new general manager for the Edmonton Oilers.
Jackson, the hockey operations CEO, has been serving as interim GM since Hockey Hall of Famer Ken Holland left the organization last week, just days before his five-year contract expired. Jackson has stated he does not wish to be the permanent GM, so he will be seeking a replacement unless he changes his mind.
Securing a GM is a top priority. Jackson wants someone in place before negotiations begin with Leon Draisaitl on a new contract. Draisaitl is entering the final season of his eight-year deal and can sign an extension at any time.
Time is of the essence. Jackson needs to act quickly to find a suitable candidate who can then sit down with Draisaitl and Connor McDavid, whose contract expires a year later.
