The number of Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League (NOJHL) alumni advancing to higher levels continues to grow.

Among those who played at least five games in the Ontario Hockey League this past season, 20 had previous experience in the NOJHL.

This includes former Soo Thunderbirds goalie Landon Miller, who was recently selected by the Detroit Red Wings in the 2024 NHL Draft in Las Vegas.

The 6-foot-5, 193-pound Miller was picked by the Red Wings in the fourth round, 126th overall.

During the 2022-23 season with the Thunderbirds, he recorded a 14-5-2-3 record, a 2.29 goals-against average, a .923 save percentage, and two shutouts.

His save percentage tied for third-best in the NOJHL that season.

In six of his wins, he made 30-plus saves.

He also went 10-6 in the playoffs as a rookie, helping lead the Thunderbirds to a West Division title and a spot in the league final.

Another NOJHL alum and NHL draft pick, defenseman Andrew Gibson, was recently traded by Detroit to the Nashville Predators.

Gibson, 19, was named the NOJHL’s Best Defenceman with the Thunderbirds in 2021-22 and earned first team all-star honors.

The Windsor, Ontario native was originally drafted by the Red Wings in the second round of the 2023 NHL Draft, 42nd overall.
