The Toronto Maple Leafs might be close to trading Nick Robertson after he declined to sign a contract extension, with the Columbus Blue Jackets being a potential destination.

According to Adam Proteau of The Hockey News, Columbus is an ideal fit for Robertson, who is looking for new opportunities after becoming a free agent on July 1. Proteau noted, “The Blue Jackets are in the early stages of another major rebuild, which means there will be changes within the roster. If Columbus GM Don Waddell trades veteran forward Boone Jenner, a spot in the Jackets’ top-six would open up, and the pressure on Robertson would be less intense in a quieter hockey market like Ohio.”

It makes sense for Toronto to consider trading Robertson for a high draft pick and a promising prospect. At 23 years old at the start of the 2024-25 season, Robertson has yet to reach his full potential.

For Robertson, moving to Columbus would provide a fresh start, while the Maple Leafs would benefit from acquiring a proven point-scoring center like Boone Jenner. Jenner recorded 35 points in 58 games during the 2024 season, and he has consistently produced in recent years, with 44, 45, and 35 points in the past three seasons, playing 59, 68, and 58 games respectively.
