The Los Angeles Dodgers have claimed right-handed relief pitcher Brent Honeywell Jr. off waivers from the Pittsburgh Pirates. As the MLB trade deadline approaches, teams are releasing players, and contenders are taking advantage of waiver pickups. The Pirates designated the 29-year-old for assignment just a day ago, and he was quickly claimed by the Dodgers.
Honeywell Jr. has posted a 2.70 ERA in two appearances this season for the Pirates. Wearing number 34, he has previously played for the Tampa Bay Rays, San Diego Padres, and Chicago White Sox. Once a top prospect in the Rays’ system, Honeywell was drafted in the second round of the 2014 MLB Draft. Unfortunately, his career has been marred by numerous injuries, resulting in multiple stints on the IL.
Honeywell has undergone four arm surgeries within a 3 1/2-year period, including Tommy John surgery. During his minor league career, he spent considerable time with the Durham Bulls. Honeywell had a brief stint with the Pirates, who acquired him on July 7th when Bailey Falter was placed on the IL.
He made his MLB debut with the Rays on April 11th, 2021. At Triple-A Durham, he had a record of 12-8 in 24 starts with a 3.64 ERA. Despite his injuries, his best major league season was with the Padres, where he recorded a 4.05 ERA over a larger sample size. With only two starts for the Pirates before being placed on waivers, it will be interesting to see how Honeywell performs with the Dodgers.
