Keep an eye on the Chicago Cubs—they’ve begun to improve, going 7-3 over their last 10 games as of Sunday. While it might be too late to make a significant impact, the tight National League Wild Card race means they’re only 4.5 games behind the final spot. If they keep up this performance, they could remain in contention and make a late-season push.
For this to happen, the players need to continue performing at a high level. Coming out of the All-Star break, they must prove they can sustain their current form to prevent the front office from trading key pieces before the July 30 deadline.
However, they’ll face this challenge without one of their star relievers. Meghan Montemurro of The Chicago Tribune reported that Yency Almonte underwent labral repair surgery on his throwing shoulder. This decision followed a setback and a second opinion on his injury.
Almonte, a veteran acquired this past offseason in a trade with the Los Angeles Dodgers, also brought in star prospect turned contributor Michael Busch. In 17 appearances, the 30-year-old reliever recorded a 3.45 ERA with 20 strikeouts over 15.2 innings pitched before landing on the injured list on May 11.
