Ferrari team principal Frederic Vasseur is optimistic that Lewis Hamilton’s arrival at the team will bolster their ability to attract F1 engineers from other teams.
With more than half of the F1 teams based in the United Kingdom, Ferrari stands out as one of the minority teams headquartered elsewhere in the world at Maranello, Italy. Throughout its history in F1, Ferrari has traditionally drawn its engineering talent from within Europe, particularly Italy.
However, Vasseur believes that Hamilton’s decision to join Ferrari next year will inspire engineers from outside Italy to consider joining the team.
“Lewis was a significant figure because it sends a positive message to the paddock about the team’s future,” Vasseur told the Financial Times.
“He had to make a decision: ‘Where do I have the best chance to win the World Championship in 2025, ’26, ’27?’ And he chose ‘Ferrari’.
“For us, [Hamilton’s arrival] is also the best way to attract talented individuals. We already have excellent people at Ferrari, but I want to strengthen our team.
“Most F1 technicians are based in the UK. If you move from Mercedes in Brackley to Red Bull in Milton Keynes, you can keep your children in the same school and maintain the same residence. It’s an easy switch from Friday to Monday. Moving to Italy is a different proposition; it involves relocating families and a lifestyle change. Hamilton’s move will assist us in this regard.”
