Detroit Tigers outfielder Kerry Carpenter, a key figure in the team’s offensive lineup, has been sidelined since late May due to a lumbar spine stress fracture.
It has been nearly two months since he last played a competitive game. The 26-year-old was set to make a comeback with the Tigers by late July, but at the end of June, he experienced lower back discomfort while running, temporarily halting his recovery. After a two-week break, he has resumed baseball activities.
“It was quite disappointing,” Carpenter remarked, “but not as severe as the initial injury. I was able to return to training a couple of weeks later. It happened while I was running. I’m not entirely sure why, but I felt it.”
Despite the setback, Carpenter is confident about rejoining the Tigers before the conclusion of the 2024 season.
“I can’t envision a scenario where I wouldn’t,” Carpenter stated.
The final game of the season is scheduled for September 29 against the Chicago White Sox, which is still more than the duration Carpenter has been on the injured list since late May—two months and one week.
Carpenter, a left-handed batter, holds a .283 batting average with eight home runs, 11 walks, and 38 strikeouts over 50 games, posting a .914 OPS. He excels particularly against right-handed pitchers, batting .310 with a 1.004 OPS.
“I’m uncertain about the timeline yet,” Carpenter added.
