The Los Angeles Dodgers have officially acquired Chicago White Sox left-handed starter Garrett Crochet in a deal completed ahead of the July 30 trade deadline.

According to ESPN’s Alden Gonzalez, “Chicago White Sox lefty Garrett Crochet was the top target for the Dodgers, whether he was to continue as a starter or transition to a reliever. Crochet, a converted starter, had already surpassed 100 innings this season.” Although Crochet could serve as a key multi-inning reliever for the Dodgers, the White Sox negotiated a return based on his value as a starter.

The 25-year-old Crochet, standing at 6’6″, finished the season with a 6-6 record, a 3.02 ERA (0.93 WHIP), and 141 strikeouts over 18 starts.

Crochet is under team control for the next three seasons, but with the White Sox struggling at the bottom of the league with a 27-72 record, they were eager to acquire prospects and players to aid their rebuilding efforts. The trade of Crochet will support their future goals.

USA Today’s Bob Nightengale had previously reported that the White Sox had no expectations of securing a long-term deal with Crochet, which accelerated their decision to move him before the deadline.

The Dodgers, currently leading the National League West with a 57-41 record, faced significant pitching challenges due to injuries. With Clayton Kershaw (left shoulder surgery) and Yoshinobu Yamamoto (right triceps tightness) on the 60-day IL, and Tyler Glasnow expected back soon from the 15-day IL, adding Crochet was a crucial move. Additionally, the Dodgers have been without superstar Mookie Betts since June 16 due to a fractured left hand.

The acquisition of Crochet strengthens the Dodgers’ roster as they continue their pursuit of a successful season. Jon Heyman of the New York Post had reported that Crochet was a highly coveted player by all contending teams, reflecting his impressive performance and value.
