BREAKING:Detroit Tigers Promote 28…read more
The Detroit Tigers executed several roster moves on Sunday, including placing Kerry Carpenter on the 60-day injured list. Carpenter, who has been on the injured list for 55 days already, has no clear timeline for recovery according to Chris McCosky.
To make space on the 40-man roster, the Tigers have promoted Bligh Madris, who is set to make his major league debut with the team. Madris will start at first base and bat sixth in the lineup on Sunday.
The call-up of the 28-year-old Madris is somewhat unexpected given the situation with Spencer Torkelson. Torkelson, who was demoted to Triple-A Toledo, has struggled at that level, hitting .234/.349/.383 with five home runs in 141 at-bats.
Drafted first overall in the 2020 MLB Draft, Torkelson has yet to make a significant impact for the Tigers, aside from a promising sophomore year with 31 home runs. In 2024, he posted a .201/.266/.330 line with four home runs in 209 at-bats before his demotion.
The Tigers’ decision to promote another first baseman rather than recalling Torkelson raises questions about his future with the team. It could potentially signal that Torkelson might be traded in the near future, as other teams may have interest in the 24-year-old.
Meanwhile, Madris will have the chance to prove himself after hitting .236/.339/.464 with 14 home runs in 263 at-bats in Triple-A.
