At Chavez Ravine, where temperatures soared past 80 degrees, hitters were sending the ball soaring out of Dodger Stadium. On Sunday night, the Boston Red Sox and Los Angeles Dodgers combined for seven home runs, with the most notable coming from Shohei Ohtani.
Although Ohtani didn’t become the seventh player to hit a ball completely out of Dodger Stadium, he came extremely close. In the fifth inning, he smashed an 86 mph cutter from Red Sox pitcher Kutter Crawford, sending the ball so high it nearly hit the roof above the pavilion stands. The 473-foot blast marked Ohtani’s 30th home run of the season.
Only six home runs have ever been hit out of Dodger Stadium. The most recent was by Fernando Tatis Jr. of the San Diego Padres on September 30, 2021. Other players who have accomplished this feat include Giancarlo Stanton of the Miami Marlins (May 12, 2015), Mark McGwire of the St. Louis Cardinals (May 22, 1999), Mike Piazza of the Dodgers (September 21, 1997), and Willie Stargell of the Pittsburgh Pirates (August 5, 1969, and May 8, 1973).
Shohei Ohtani’s 473-foot home run is tied for the third-longest of the season, alongside Aaron Judge of the New York Yankees (May 5 against the Houston Astros) and Mike Trout of the Los Angeles Angels (April 1 against the Marlins). Ohtani previously held the longest home run of 2024 with a 476-foot shot against the Colorado Rockies on June 18, but this was surpassed earlier Sunday when Jorge Soler of the San Francisco Giants hit a 478-foot home run against the Rockies at Coors Field.
The Dodgers won the game 9-6, completing a three-game sweep of the Red Sox.
