Rob Rossi of The Athletic had reported that Crosby and the Penguins were “nearing a new contract,” with an agreement expected soon. Despite this, two weeks have passed since Rossi’s update, and the deal remains unfinalized.
While a lifetime extension with Pittsburgh still seems likely, the prolonged delay has fueled speculation about Crosby’s future. Discussions about potential new teams for Crosby have already begun, with the Colorado Avalanche and Montreal Canadiens frequently mentioned as possible destinations if no agreement is reached.
As the Penguins head into the 2024-25 season with Crosby in the final year of his current contract, trade or free-agent speculation is expected to intensify. NHL Network’s Mike Rupp noted that while an extension is anticipated, a poor start to the season could exacerbate the situation, adding to the speculation.
The Penguins, having missed the playoffs in the past two seasons after 16 consecutive postseason appearances, face uncertainty as Crosby, along with aging teammates Evgeni Malkin and Kris Letang, looks to improve the team’s fortunes.
