The Detroit Tigers have traded Tarik Skubal this week, a move that may have seemed like giving up on the season, but could actually improve their team.
Skubal, 27, was one of the top pitchers in the league, ranking second in MLB with a 2.34 ERA, second with a 0.92 WHIP, and third with 146 strikeouts. No other pitcher matched his top-three rankings in two of these categories.
Despite the seemingly irrational nature of trading such elite talent, the Tigers have made the decision. The Baltimore Orioles, eager to enhance their roster, offered three or four MLB-ready prospects, taking advantage of their strong offensive prospects.
Although it seemed unlikely the Tigers would trade Skubal this season due to his elite status and two years of team control remaining, the deal has been completed. This move suggests that the Tigers believe they can improve their team with the prospects acquired from the Orioles.
