Helmut Marko claims that Lewis Hamilton “turned in” on Max Verstappen as the Red Bull driver attempted to pass him on the inside at Turn One during the Hungarian Grand Prix.
Despite arriving at the Hungaroring with five updates for the RB20, Red Bull struggled to match McLaren’s pace. This, along with a questionable strategy, left Verstappen frustrated.
In the closing laps, after being undercut by Hamilton earlier, Verstappen tried to overtake Hamilton at Turn One. However, he clipped the front right tire of Hamilton’s Mercedes, briefly lifting it off the ground.
As a result, Verstappen lost fourth place to Charles Leclerc, but managed to continue and finished the race in fifth. The stewards reviewed the incident and deemed it a “racing collision,” with no penalties issued. Their decision stated that Car 1 (Verstappen) had locked up both front wheels before the impact and deviated from the typical overtaking line. Hamilton, driving Car 44, considered it a racing incident, while Verstappen believed Hamilton had changed direction under braking.
