Thomas announces Alan Dunson’s promotion to Associate Head Coach.

BLACKSBURG – After a successful inaugural year with the Virginia Tech track and field program, Director Ben Thomas has announced the promotion of Alan Dunson to Associate Head Coach. In this new position, Dunson will continue to enhance the sprints, hurdles, and relays.

Dunson’s advancement follows a season that included six event victories at the ACC Championships, two podium finishes for the men’s team, and a third consecutive Indoor ACC Championship for the women’s team.

Under Dunson’s guidance, sophomore sprinter Judson Lincoln IV excelled, securing a third-place finish at indoor nationals, earning Second Team All-American honors in the DMR, ranking as the second-best qualifier in the NCAA First Round of Outdoor Championships, and achieving a fifth-place finish at NCAA Outdoor Nationals.

At the Indoor ACC Track and Field Championships, the Virginia Tech men and women swept the 400m, with Barbora Malikova setting a personal best of 52.56 and Judson Lincoln IV recording 45.70 for their respective first-place finishes. Malikova later broke her personal record and the program record in the 400m with a time of 51.45 this summer.

Additionally, at the 2024 ACC Indoor Championships, the Hokies won the men’s 4x400m relay, setting a meet record of 3:06.00 and claiming the title for the first time in program history.

During the outdoor season, both Dunson and Lincoln IV continued to excel. Lincoln set new program and ACC meet records in the 400m with a time of 44.60 and won the 200m with a personal best of 20.51.

The 4x400m relay team replicated their indoor success at the Outdoor ACC Championships, breaking the program record with an impressive 3:03.35. This time, which represented a significant improvement from earlier in the season, qualified them for the NCAA Championships, where they competed in the finals. The 3:03.35 also met Worlds and Olympic Trials standards.
