AC/DC Ends Tie with The Eagles and Makes History
AC/DC’s *Back in Black* album, released over 40 years ago, continues to gain popularity. While the album has always been beloved by American fans, its recent performance is particularly notable. The band has now received new recognition, underscoring the album’s enduring appeal.
The RIAA (Recording Industry Association of America) has awarded *Back in Black* a new platinum certification. This achievement reflects the album’s movement of an additional one million equivalent units, encompassing both purchases and streaming.
*Back in Black* has moved from 26-times platinum to 27-times platinum, equating to approximately 2.7 times diamond status. This recent certification comes shortly after its last RIAA award, indicating an uptick in its consumption.
On July 8, *Back in Black* was certified 26-times platinum, marking its first new award from the RIAA in nearly five years. In December 2019, the album had achieved 25-times platinum status.
Remarkably, *Back in Black* required about five years to reach another million units between 2019 and 2024. However, it only took about a month to add the same number of copies to its total.
With its new 27-times platinum certification, *Back in Black* is now the third-highest-certified album in U.S. history. It previously shared this position with the Eagles’ *Hotel California*, which now holds fourth place with 26 million certified units.
The top position remains held by the Eagles’ compilation *Their Greatest Hits 1971-1975*, with 38 million units sold. Michael Jackson’s *Thriller* follows, with 34 million certified copies.
