Gamecock women’s basketball star Ashlyn Watkins, following her arrest, is still claiming her innocence, her attorney reports.
COLUMBIA, S.C. (WIS) – The attorney representing Ashlyn Watkins, a star forward for the Gamecock women’s basketball team, has addressed the charges against her.
On Saturday, Watkins was arrested by campus police following an incident at an affiliated apartment complex on the University of South Carolina’s (USC) campus.
Watkins faces charges of assault and battery as well as kidnapping.
Over the weekend, WIS News 10 spoke with Todd Rutherford, an attorney and state representative, who said, “We ask for patience as we clarify the events of the past two nights. We firmly believe that once all the facts are known, this will be recognized as a misunderstanding. She maintains her innocence throughout this process.”
According to the arrest warrant, Watkins allegedly assaulted an unidentified female by “forcefully grabbing her face, pulling her by her arms, and pushing her.”
Watkins appeared in bond court, where she was granted a $30,000 personal recognizance bond. She is scheduled for a first appearance hearing on Friday, Oct. 25.
