Alabama football coach Kalen DeBoer discusses Georgia, Kirby Smart

“I think the main thing is, this is for us our first conference game,” DeBoer said Wednesday on the SEC coaches teleconference. “It’s against an opponent (ranked) No. 1. Maybe No. 2 depending on where you look. A top-ranked team you know brings it each and every Saturday. Is going to be extremely well coached. We know it’s going to be a great test for us. It’s really about the game. There isn’t any past history with us competing against each other. Certainly understand everything Coach Smart’s done for this program throughout the many years he put in helping us and our program grow.”

Why Alabama football’s Kalen DeBoer said much of his offense won’t be installed in 2024

“There’s going to be a lot of our offense that we never install this year, just because of the players that we have,” DeBoer said Wednesday on the SEC’s weekly media teleconference. “There’s going to be other elements of the system that we haven’t used much the past few years, that we’ll go draw upon.”…

“It’s more about what direction our offense continues to evolve,” he added. “The plays are endless. There are endless pass plays, things we’ve done, it’s a matter of what we’re drawing on and how you’re trying to evolve and utilize the skills of the players you have here.”

The staff has done an outstanding job thus far of figuring out what the players execute well, and playing to those strengths. That will need to continue next Saturday.

Kennington Smith III has some good stuff for you. As he notes, Alabama has been good on 3rd and long, but needs to be in that situation less than they have been. Lots of good stuff in here.

Film study: Assessing Alabama’s strengths and weaknesses through three games

Alabama’s third down success is a credit to its ability to work out of tough situations. The team’s average third down distance through three games is 6.2 yards. That hasn’t hurt yet, but it’s likely not sustainable.

Penalties are a contributor. All 15 of Alabama’s offensive penalties have occurred on first or second down. Those have been costly, but there have also been some execution errors that have prevented the offense from success.

This play is an example. Alabama calls a simple screen on first down that’s initially set up well, but Milroe throws an inaccurate ball to Ryan Williams, who isn’t able to make a play by the time he recovers. As the schedule difficulty increases, executing plays like this will be key in keeping the offense on schedule.
