Olympian Sha’Carri Richardson was honored by her former high school, Dallas Carter, with a track named in her honor. On September 20, Richardson received a warm welcome at her alma mater during the school’s football game against Wilmer-Hutchins. The ceremony took place at Kincaide Stadium, part of the Jesse Owens Athletic Complex, which is located about a mile from Dallas Carter High School. New signage at the track facility, bearing Richardson’s name in bright white letters, was unveiled during halftime. The stadium also features a plaque detailing Richardson’s numerous achievements in track and field.
Richardson expressed her pride in being an alumna of the Dallas Independent School District (DISD) and a native of Dallas. “I’m proud to come out of the DISD,” she told the crowd in attendance. “I ran on this track. I can say I started my career on this track. So, for it to be named after me now, it’s an honor. But it shows that I have a responsibility to Dallas.” She emphasized her deep connection to the city, stating that her roots in Dallas have continually supported her throughout her career. “No matter how far I go, I will never, ever, ever let people forget where I come from,” she said.
Richardson credited Dallas as the source of her strength, determination, and joy, which she brings to her professional life. She promised to continue representing the city well as long as the community continues to show her the love and support they’ve always given. “That’s where I get my heart. That’s where I get my mindset and that’s just where I get my joy from as well. I’m gonna continue to represent very well,” Richardson said passionately.
Sha’Carri Richardson’s journey began as a standout sprinter at Dallas Carter High School. She was ranked the top high school sprinter in the class of 2018, which eventually led her to Louisiana State University (LSU). At LSU, Richardson delivered on her potential, setting multiple records during her freshman year. Her performance garnered the attention of USA Track and Field, leading to her professional debut in 2019.
Her accomplishments continued to mount as she represented the U.S. on the international stage. Richardson secured gold and silver medals at the Paris Olympic Games in the 4x100m relay and the 100m dash, respectively. These achievements solidified her status as one of the top sprinters in the world, furthering her legacy in the sport.
The decision to name the track at Kincaide Stadium after Richardson was made by the Dallas ISD school board in October 2023. According to the district’s website, the naming serves as a tribute to her extraordinary achievements in track and field and her enduring connection to the Dallas community. This honor cements Richardson’s legacy not only as a world-class athlete but also as a role model for the next generation of Dallas athletes.
