Jamey Johnson, a veteran of nearly two decades in country music, recently honored fellow country star Chris Stapleton with a stirring rendition of “Whiskey and You” at the 17th Annual ACM Honors. Johnson, known for hit tracks like “High Cost of Living” and “In Color,” has collaborated with country legends such as George Strait, Trace Adkins, and Willie Nelson throughout his career. Though the ACM Honors took place last month, the special event only aired recently, giving viewers a chance to witness Johnson’s mesmerizing tribute.

“Whiskey and You,” a song that Stapleton released on his 2015 Traveller album, originally dates back to 2007 when Tim McGraw recorded it for his Let It Go album. Since then, several artists, including Jason Eady and Aaron Lewis, have covered the song. However, Johnson’s rendition at the ACM Honors was particularly well-received by fans, who praised his soulful delivery. Commenters expressed their admiration, with one noting, “Mr. Johnson has one of the best voices of all time. Literally a living legend.” Another fan shared newfound appreciation for Johnson, stating, “He has overcome a lot, and though it’s tough for him at times, he still shares his talent with us.”

In addition to the performance, Stapleton himself reflected on the creation of “Whiskey and You,” which he co-wrote with Lee Thomas Miller. Stapleton revealed that Miller had brought the title into the writing session, and the song flowed naturally from there. Though originally featured on Tim McGraw’s album, Stapleton felt the song was special and began performing it live. Over time, it became a staple of his setlists. Stapleton shared, “We went through several versions of recording this song until I finally decided it was best to present it in its original form: me, a guitar, and one microphone.”

While Johnson’s tribute to Stapleton stole the show, the night also belonged to Stapleton, who was awarded the 59th ACM Artist-Songwriter of the Year award. This recognition adds to the growing list of accolades Stapleton has garnered throughout his successful career. As both an artist and a songwriter, Stapleton continues to make a significant impact on the country music scene, with songs like “Whiskey and You” cementing his legacy.
