Real Cause Behind Cal Poly’s Shelby Daniele’s Unfortunate Death Revealed
Shelby Daniele, a star sprinter and integral part of California Polytechnic State University’s track and field team, tragically passed away, leaving many heartbroken. Her athletic journey began at Buchanan High School in Fresno, California, where she made history at the 2019 CIF State Championship by finishing the 200-meter event in 23.73 seconds, the second-best time in Central Section history. Shelby’s numerous accolades throughout her career earned her a reputation for excellence on and off the track.
The news of her untimely death was revealed on National Daughters Day by Brian Brandenburg, the father of Eva, one of Shelby’s teammates. In a heartfelt Instagram post, Brandenburg paid tribute to his daughters while also revealing that Shelby had passed away from a brain aneurysm. Shelby had been a major influence on Eva’s decision to run track at Cal Poly. Brandenburg’s message, filled with grief and love, called for everyone to cherish their loved ones. “Hug your children every time you can and tell them you love them every day,” he urged, asking for prayers for Shelby and her family.
In the wake of her passing, friends, family, and the community gathered at Veterans Memorial Stadium to honor Shelby’s memory and celebrate the legacy she left behind. Cal Poly’s athletic department shared their sorrow on social media, announcing her death on September 27. They highlighted her achievements, both academic and athletic, noting that she had recently graduated with distinction in agriculture. Shelby was a six-time All-Big West honoree, a two-time Big West champion, and a school record holder. Despite her success, the school emphasized that she would be remembered most for her leadership, kindness, and as a teammate.
Shelby’s final track performance came in May 2024 at the Big West Track & Field Championships, where she secured second place with a time of 23.51 seconds. This achievement was a testament to her enduring talent and determination, even as she neared the end of her collegiate career.
Brian Weaver, Shelby’s track and field coach at Buchanan High School, paid tribute to her, reflecting on their shared journey during her high school years. Weaver recalled Shelby as a fierce competitor who never gave up, even when faced with challenges. One of his fondest memories was from the 2019 state championship, where Shelby pushed through exhaustion to help her team win the title. Weaver cherished their coaching relationship, noting how Shelby always remembered to thank those who supported her.
Even after moving on to Cal Poly, Shelby made time to visit her high school coaches and athletes, encouraging others to reach their full potential. Coach Weaver described Shelby as someone who “loved everything,” stating that the best way to honor her memory would be to live life fully, just as she did. Her aspirations, reflected in her career goal of improving the environment through agricultural business, were yet another example of her desire to give back to society.
Though Shelby Daniele’s life was tragically cut short, her legacy of athletic excellence, leadership, and kindness will endure.
