Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa has been at the center of intense discussions about his future following a serious head injury in Week 2 against the Buffalo Bills. The 26-year-old suffered a concussion, his fourth in five years, which led many to speculate whether he should consider retirement for his long-term health. Despite this, recent reports indicate that Tagovailoa, now symptom-free, intends to return to action as soon as he’s fully ready.

The Miami Dolphins placed Tagovailoa on injured reserve after the injury, meaning the earliest he could return to play would be in Week 8, when the Dolphins face the Arizona Cardinals. Although some fans and analysts have urged him to retire for the sake of his well-being, Tagovailoa has maintained that he plans to return to the field. His decision has been supported by NFL legend and two-time Super Bowl-winning quarterback Ben Roethlisberger.

Speaking on ESPN’s The Pat McAfee Show, Roethlisberger praised Tagovailoa for his approach to recovery. “I’m proud of him,” Roethlisberger said, acknowledging his own history with concussions during his NFL career. “I’m not a doctor, but I’ve had my share of concussions and injuries. The one thing I always talk about and advocate for is the brain – you can’t get a new one.”

Roethlisberger, who spent 18 seasons with the Pittsburgh Steelers, emphasized the importance of allowing the brain to heal fully before returning to the field. “I think it’s smart what he’s doing, taking his time,” he continued. “You have to let the brain heal. I believe Tua can still play. It’s his decision, but he’s doing the right thing by giving himself the time he needs to recover.”

Tagovailoa’s situation has sparked broader conversations about player safety in the NFL, particularly when it comes to head injuries. Roethlisberger, who himself dealt with concussions throughout his career, strongly agrees with Tagovailoa’s decision to prioritize his health over rushing back onto the field.

“I’m glad he’s taking time to make sure he’s ready and right before coming back,” Roethlisberger added. “It’s a smart approach, and it shows he’s thinking about his long-term future.”

For now, while there are still questions surrounding Tagovailoa’s future in the NFL, both his camp and supporters like Roethlisberger agree that taking a cautious and measured path is the right move.
