Kamala Harris, the Democratic Party’s 2024 presidential nominee, has opened up about her surprising passion for Formula 1 racing, naming Lewis Hamilton as her favorite driver. Harris, who is currently campaigning for the upcoming presidential election on November 5, revealed her love for the sport during an interview with Howard Stern. She succeeded President Joe Biden as the party’s nominee earlier this year after Biden stepped down.

During the interview, Stern asked if Harris’s newfound love for Formula 1 was a part of her campaign strategy, but she quickly dismissed the idea, emphasizing that it’s a genuine personal interest. “No, God no!” Harris responded. “It’s not a campaign thing. Our whole family loves it.” She admitted, however, that her busy campaign schedule has kept her from watching many races recently due to the time differences between the locations of various F1 races and the United States.

Harris was also asked about her favorite driver, to which she immediately replied, “Lewis Hamilton, of course.” Stern, unfamiliar with Hamilton, asked her to elaborate, and Harris expressed surprise that he wasn’t familiar with the seven-time world champion. “Ah, he’s leaving Mercedes… you don’t know him? You don’t watch Formula 1? Once you start watching, you might get hooked,” she added.

Hamilton, a prominent figure in the world of Formula 1, has gained recognition not only for his driving skills but also for his activism. Over the past few years, he has been a vocal advocate for social justice, supporting causes such as racial equality, women’s rights, and animal welfare. His commitment to using his platform for progressive issues has earned him significant respect and support from fans and public figures alike.

Additionally, Hamilton has been a strong advocate for increasing diversity and representation within Formula 1. One of his key campaigns has been to bring the sport back to Africa, an effort he believes is essential for the series to be considered a true World Championship. Earlier this year, Hamilton spoke out about the importance of including Africa in the F1 calendar, stating, “We can’t keep adding races elsewhere and continue to ignore Africa. The world takes from Africa without giving back.” Hamilton hopes to highlight the beauty and vastness of the continent while advocating for much-needed support and investment.
