Lewis Hamilton has shared his admiration for Michael Schumacher as he prepares to join Ferrari, following in the footsteps of one of Formula 1’s greatest legends. Hamilton, who has spent over a decade at Mercedes, is set to make the highly anticipated switch to Ferrari next season, marking what could be the final chapter of his illustrious racing career.

Speaking to The Times, Hamilton opened up about the emotional journey of making this significant change, admitting that telling his boss at Mercedes was a daunting moment. “It’s been a rollercoaster of emotions from the moment I signed the contract—telling my boss, that was terrifying,” Hamilton revealed. However, he emphasized the excitement of the move, recalling how, as a child, he was captivated by Schumacher’s dominance at Ferrari.

“Every driver watches that car and you’re like, ‘What would it be like to sit in the red cockpit?’” Hamilton said, referencing Schumacher’s iconic red Ferrari, which became synonymous with success in the early 2000s. Schumacher, who won five consecutive championships with Ferrari under team principal Jean Todt, is still regarded as one of the greatest drivers in the sport’s history. His record of seven world championships, a feat Hamilton matched during his time at Mercedes, remains a benchmark of excellence in Formula 1.

Schumacher’s return to F1 with Mercedes after a three-year retirement laid some of the groundwork for Hamilton’s own success with the team. Now, Hamilton looks forward to carrying the legacy of Ferrari, the sport’s most successful team, as he seeks to break Schumacher’s record and claim his eighth championship.

Hamilton, who will be racing into his 40s with Ferrari, is confident in his abilities despite his age. “Honestly, right now I feel I’m healthier than I’ve ever been,” he said. “My reaction times are still quicker than the young guys. I think I’m a better driver than I was at 22. I was just young, energetic, and ruthless, but no finesse, no balance.”

Reflecting on his development, Hamilton explained that his growth has been about more than just speed. “Being a good racing driver, it’s not just about being fast, it’s about being the most rounded.” As he heads into this new chapter, Hamilton is not just chasing titles, but aiming to solidify his legacy as a complete, well-rounded racer.
