The organisers of the United States Grand Prix have been fined £416,380 (€500,000) by the FIA following a dangerous track invasion by spectators just moments after the conclusion of the race. The incident took place at the Circuit of the Americas on Sunday, shortly after the thrilling Formula 1 event ended, when a large number of fans breached security and entered the track while cars were still completing their cooldown laps.
According to the FIA’s investigation, more than 200 spectators left their seats in the grandstand, scaled a fence, dropped from a height of about two meters, and then crossed another fence and barrier to gain access to the track. This posed a significant safety risk, as several F1 cars were still moving at considerable speeds.
The governing body of motorsport, the FIA, viewed this as a severe breach of safety protocols and took immediate action. The organisation noted that any incursion onto a live track, particularly when vehicles are still moving, is extremely hazardous. The reports are expected to address how so many spectators were able to access the restricted area, and how measures will be improved to prevent such incidents in the future.
The fine imposed on the event organisers is one of the more substantial financial penalties issued in recent memory and underscores the importance of maintaining strict security measures at Formula 1 races. Track invasions have been a recurring issue at various sporting events, and the FIA has consistently taken a firm stance to ensure the safety of both fans and competitors.
