Fernando Alonso, the two-time Formula 1 world champion, issued a statement regarding his health following a challenging 2024 season with Aston Martin. After securing several podium finishes in 2023, Alonso’s 2024 campaign has been disappointing, with the Spaniard failing to reach the podium at any point. Aston Martin also struggled, finishing fifth in the Constructors’ Championship, far behind the top four teams. Despite this, Alonso secured a ninth-place finish in the Drivers’ Championship, making him the highest-ranked driver outside of the top four teams.
However, Alonso revealed that his difficulties in 2024 were not just related to performance but also to health issues stemming from the porpoising of his Aston Martin car. Speaking to DAZN at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, he explained that the car’s bouncing and instability had led to physical injuries, particularly to his shoulder. He noted that driving cars like those from McLaren, Ferrari, or Mercedes, which don’t have similar handling issues, was less physically taxing. Alonso admitted that after the Brazilian Grand Prix, he raced through four events dealing with shoulder pain, relying on painkillers to manage the discomfort.
The 43-year-old rejected suggestions that his physical struggles were due to his age, emphasizing that the challenges were linked to the car’s performance rather than his health. Alonso, known for his resilience, jokingly referenced his condition compared to other drivers, saying he felt in better shape than many of his peers. Despite the setbacks, Alonso remains focused on the future, with Aston Martin preparing to make improvements, including the arrival of renowned engineer Adrian Newey.
