Former F1 team owner slams Ferrari for signing Lewis Hamilton over Carlos Sainz says, ‘what the f***, absolute suicidal’

Ex-F1 team owner Eddie Jordan has labeled Ferrari’s decision to replace Carlos Sainz with Lewis Hamilton as “absolutely suicidal.” With the arrival of 2025, Hamilton officially joins Ferrari, while Sainz transitions to Williams. However, this surprising move has been met with skepticism, particularly from Jordan, who believes the decision could backfire.

Hamilton’s move to Maranello has raised many eyebrows, especially considering that the decision was made before the 2024 season, a year which, according to many, was Hamilton’s least successful yet. Despite this, Ferrari has placed its faith in the seven-time world champion to bring them the success they’ve been missing for over a decade.

On the other hand, Carlos Sainz had an impressive final year with Ferrari, helping the team nearly secure the constructors’ title. The Scuderia finished just 13 points behind McLaren, signaling a competitive and well-functioning unit under the Spanish driver’s guidance.

 Eddie Jordan’s Damning Verdict

During a recent episode of the Formula for Success podcast, Jordan, alongside co-host David Coulthard, reflected on the most shocking moments in the F1 world in 2024. Coulthard described Hamilton’s signing as his “FFS moment,” explaining, “I just never saw that coming.”

Jordan strongly agreed with Coulthard, going further to express his disapproval of Ferrari’s decision. He directed his criticism at John Elkann, the chairman of Ferrari’s parent group, for allowing the move. Jordan stated, “We’re on the same page here, because my FFS is, I say to John Elkann, who’s the chairman of that group, what the f**k was he thinking about in getting rid of Carlos, when he had a very happy, friendly, structured team that knew how to work together. The drivers got on well together.”

The Challenge Ahead for Ferrari

Jordan also pointed out that Fred Vasseur, Ferrari’s team principal, now faces the challenging task of integrating Hamilton into an already well-established team dynamic. He said, “Fred Vasseur had a real opportunity to bring this team great, great success. Now he has to start thinking about gelling and mending away, that he can get a new member of the team, egos, everything involved.”

However, Jordan acknowledged that Hamilton is known for being a particularly likable person, which could help ease the transition. “Lewis is a particularly nice person. I’m not sure there’s many nicer people on the grid than Lewis Hamilton, so I don’t think he’ll have a problem there.”

Hamilton Tasked with Ending Ferrari’s Drought

As Hamilton embarks on his new chapter with Ferrari, he faces the monumental challenge of ending the team’s long title drought. The last time Ferrari won the Constructors’ Championship was in 2008, and their last Drivers’ Championship came in 2007 with Kimi Räikkönen. Hamilton, now 39 years old, will be hoping to reverse Ferrari’s fortunes and bring them back to the top after years of near-misses.

In Jordan’s eyes, Ferrari’s decision to part ways with Sainz in favor of Hamilton may have significant consequences, which could prove detrimental to the team’s future.
