Lewis Hamilton branded ‘biggest disappointment’ in ‘controversial’ DC comments
Lewis Hamilton, a seven-time Formula 1 World Champion, has been labeled the “biggest disappointment” of the 2024 season by former F1 driver and 13-time race winner David Coulthard. The remarks, described as controversial, reflect on Hamilton’s difficult final season with Mercedes before his move to Ferrari.
Hamilton’s 12th season with the Silver Arrows saw notable struggles, including a disappointing performance at the Qatar Grand Prix, where he openly admitted, “I’m definitely not fast anymore.” This statement came after a challenging year in which he was decisively outperformed by teammate George Russell in qualifying sessions, losing the head-to-head battle 19-5. The Briton’s frustrations were evident as he suggested he was ready for the season to end, even contemplating retirement after the Brazilian Grand Prix.
Speaking to Viaplay, Coulthard didn’t mince words when asked about his biggest disappointment of the season. “I would still point to Lewis as the biggest disappointment,” he said. “I know that’s controversial as he’s a seven-time World Champion and a real winning machine, but I’ve never seen this version of Lewis in Formula 1. He was beaten in qualifying, while the greats can always find speed somewhere to squeeze out a lap when it really matters.”
Coulthard’s comments highlight a stark contrast to Hamilton’s illustrious career, which boasts a record-equalling seven World Championships, 105 race wins, 104 pole positions, and 202 podium finishes. However, 2024 presented a version of Hamilton unrecognizable to fans and critics alike, as he struggled to maintain his previous dominance.
Despite these struggles, Hamilton’s move to Ferrari for 2025 is already making waves. Coulthard predicts the transition will bring substantial financial benefits to the Scuderia, with Hamilton’s star power boosting the team’s global appeal.
While Hamilton’s legacy as one of the sport’s greatest drivers is secure, his final season with Mercedes has sparked questions about his future competitiveness at Ferrari. The challenges of 2024 have undoubtedly cast a shadow on an otherwise stellar career, leaving fans and pundits eager to see if he can reignite his winning ways in new colors.
