UCLA has been making waves on offense after an extremely unproductive 2024 season. New offensive coordinator Tino Sunseri has turned around offenses at both James Madison and Indiana, leading both programs to double-digit win seasons with Coach Curt Cignettin
Now in Westwood, Sunseri looks to continue his rapid climb up the coaching ranks by reestablishing the Bruins’ offensive unit, restoring their reputation as an offensive juggernaut.
I recently spoke to Indiana Hoosiers insider Donovan James about Sunseri, asking him his thoughts on Sunseri’s move and how he thinks UCLA’s newest play-caller will work on.
“I think Tino Sunseri adapted to the talent he had instead of forcing them to do things they couldn’t,” James said. “He’s a young coach from a football family, who also played at a high level in college, so players relate to him, and he also showed an element of relatability in recruiting. He and [UCLA Head Coach DeShaun] Foster will vibe well together since they are both players’ coaches.”
Head Coach Curt Mallory announced the addition of Jordan “Tito” Overton to the Indiana State football coaching staff as the Sycamores continue to work ahead of spring camp.
Overton will take on the role of wide receivers coach, joining previously announced John Bear (offensive coordinator/quarterbacks) and Jalen Banks (running backs).
Overton spent the 2024 season on the staff at Texas Tech working with the Red Raider wide receiving corps. Texas Tech’s offense was ranked fourth national in scoring offense (37.6) and ninth for both total offense (462.7) and passing offense (296.7) over the course of the 2024 season due in part to the resurgence of the TTU wide receiver room.
Over his season in Lubbock, Texas Tech featured three receivers with at least 600 yards including Josh Kelly, Caleb Douglas, and Coy Eakin – marking the first time since 2018 and only the fourth time since 2010 the Red Raiders had three 600-yard receivers in the same season. Kelley became TTU’s first 1,000-yard receiver since 2018 and was the FBS leader with 32 catches on third downs. The Red Raider receiver converted 19 of those receptions for first downs for a Tech offense that led the Big 12 and was ranked 10th nationally in first downs offense.
Overton joined the Red Raiders following two seasons in a similar capacity at Vanderbilt. The Commodores marked Overton’s third position at the college level as he was previously the wide receivers coach at Dayton in 2021 as well as at Franklin College in 2020.
Overton has also worked at the NFL level as he was selected for the Bill Walsh Diversity Coaching Fellowship position with the Carolina Panthers in 2023.
A native of Cleveland, Ohio, Overton played collegiately at Buffalo where he appeared in 22 career games as both a wide receiver and kick returner. Overton signed with the Bulls out of Brush High School where he earning All-Ohio honors as a senior.
Overton earned his undergraduate degree in communications from Buffalo in 2020 and added his master’s in liberal arts from Vanderbilt in 2023. He is engaged to Cydnee Martin
