Toto Wolff, Mercedes’ team principal, has come under fire from a former Formula 1 driver over his decision to appoint Kimi Antonelli as Lewis Hamilton’s replacement for the 2025 season. The choice of the 18-year-old Italian has raised questions, with many doubting whether such a young and relatively inexperienced driver can successfully take over from a legend of Hamilton’s caliber.

This announcement follows confirmation that Hamilton will leave Mercedes at the end of the season to join rivals Ferrari. The seven-time world champion is preparing for an emotional farewell this weekend at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, marking the conclusion of his 12-year tenure with the Silver Arrows.

Hamilton’s 2024 season has been far from ideal. Despite showcasing his undeniable talent with impressive victories at Silverstone and Spa, the 39-year-old struggled with consistency throughout the year. Coupled with the underwhelming performance of Mercedes’ W15 car, Hamilton’s campaign fell short of expectations. Heading into the final race, he sits seventh in the drivers’ standings, trailing his teammate George Russell by 24 points.

Antonelli’s promotion has sparked debate within the F1 community. While he has demonstrated exceptional skill in junior categories, critics argue that he may not be ready to handle the pressures of driving for a top team. Wolff, however, stands by the decision, praising Antonelli’s talent and future potential.

“Kimi embodies the next generation of Formula 1,” Wolff said recently. “We have full confidence in his abilities and are committed to supporting his growth.”

As Hamilton bids farewell to Mercedes, the Yas Marina Circuit offers one final chance to celebrate a historic partnership. Fans will be hoping for a strong finish to a remarkable chapter in

F1 history.
