Sergio Perez, who recently parted ways with Red Bull, is reportedly in talks to return to racing with Ferrari in 2025. After being informed that he would leave the Red Bull team ahead of the 2024 season, Perez is exploring a potential role with Ferrari’s Hypercar program in the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC).
Perez, who joined Red Bull in 2021, had a strong start with the team, helping Max Verstappen secure his first Formula 1 World Championship in a dramatic 2021 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. Over the years, Perez has contributed to Red Bull’s success, winning five races and finishing second in the Drivers’ Championship last year. However, his form began to fluctuate, with noticeable struggles in qualifying pace, particularly after he signed a contract extension for the 2024 season. Despite these issues, Red Bull had intended to keep Perez until the end of 2026, but both the driver and the team mutually agreed to part ways earlier this week.
Following his departure from Red Bull, Perez is considering a new chapter in his racing career with Ferrari. His ties with Ferrari date back to 2010 when he became part of the Scuderia’s Driver Academy, which eventually led to his Formula 1 debut with Sauber in 2011. According to Spanish media outlet Marca, Perez is in discussions with Ferrari to join their WEC Hypercar team for the 2025 season, though his involvement will not be a full-time commitment. It is believed that Perez would race in select events, including the prestigious 24 Hours of Le Mans.
Ferrari’s Hypercar team, however, has already confirmed its driver lineup for the 2025 season. The team’s car #50 will continue with Antonio Fuoco, Miguel Molina, and Nicklas Nielsen, while car #51 will retain James Calado, Antonio Giovinazzi, and Alessandro Pier Guidi. As a result, if Perez is to join Ferrari’s Hypercar program, the team may have to make significant adjustments to its current driver roster.
Though Perez’s potential move to Ferrari is still uncertain, it signals an intriguing new direction for the Mexican driver as he transitions from Formula 1 to endurance racing. His experience and skillset would add a valuable dimension to Ferrari’s WEC ambitions, particularly at events like Le Mans.
