Big Ten Defensive Coordinator In Mix For Penn State Opening

Penn State Football is once again in search of a new defensive coordinator following Tom Allen’s departure to Clemson after just one season. This marks the third time in four years that head coach James Franklin is tasked with filling this crucial position.

Among the potential candidates, several Big Ten defensive coordinators have emerged as strong contenders:

**Jim Knowles**, currently at Ohio State, is renowned for his strategic acumen and the Buckeyes’ consistently formidable defense under his guidance.

– **Phil Parker**, serving as Iowa’s defensive coordinator, has a track record of developing top-tier defenses, making him a compelling option for the Nittany Lions.

Additionally, internal candidates are being considered. Anthony Poindexter, Penn State’s safeties coach and co-defensive coordinator, brings over two decades of coaching experience, including previous defensive coordinator roles. His promotion could ensure continuity within the defensive unit.

Another internal prospect is Deion Barnes, the defensive line coach, who has been instrumental in developing one of college football’s most formidable defensive lines. Despite his relatively recent appointment, Barnes has garnered significant respect within the program.

The selection of a new defensive coordinator is pivotal for Penn State, especially with key defensive players returning for the upcoming season. Maintaining continuity and building upon the defensive successes of recent years are likely priorities for Coach Franklin as he deliberates on this critical hire.
