A peaceful day of hiking turned into a nightmare this weekend as a sudden alpine storm swept across a popular trail in the Dolomites, catching dozens of hikers off guard and resulting in multiple casualties and emergency rescues.
According to regional authorities, the storm struck without warning late Saturday afternoon near the Via Ferrata degli Alpini, a well-known yet challenging climbing route. Fierce winds, freezing rain, and lightning battered the rugged terrain, making paths slippery and visibility dangerously low.
Search and rescue teams, assisted by mountain guides and helicopters, worked through the night to locate stranded hikers. Tragically, three people were confirmed dead, while at least seven others sustained injuries, some critical. Among the victims were international tourists and local adventurers, all experienced in high-altitude trekking.
Eyewitnesses described scenes of panic and confusion as the weather shifted rapidly. “One moment it was calm, the next it was chaos. We heard rocks falling, and then the rain came down so hard we couldn’t see more than a few meters,” said Anna Müller, a hiker from Germany who managed to reach shelter.
Meteorologists confirmed the storm developed rapidly due to unstable atmospheric conditions and warm valley air clashing with colder currents at higher elevations — a phenomenon becoming increasingly common in the region due to climate change.
Local officials are now urging travelers to exercise greater caution and to always check real-time weather updates before venturing into the high trails. “The Dolomites are breathtaking, but they are not to be underestimated,” said Luca Ferraro, a member of the Alpine Rescue Corps.
This latest tragedy adds to growing concerns about mountain safety across Europe, especially in popular but unpredictable ranges like the Dolomites. Calls have intensified for stricter regulations, better emergency alert systems, and improved on-trail communication tools.
For now, mourning families, shaken hikers, and the tight-knit alpine community are left grappling with yet another reminder that nature’s beauty can turn treacherous in an instant.
Authorities continue to investigate the event and have temporarily closed several high-risk trails as a precaution.
