BREAKING:The St. Louis Cardinals are reportedly poised to have an advantage in trade negotiations as buyers at the MLB trade deadline.
In early May, the St. Louis Cardinals had a 15-24 record and appeared likely to be sellers at the MLB trade deadline. However, two months later, the Cardinals have significantly improved and now reportedly hold a roster advantage that could benefit them as buyers.
Since their 15-24 start, the Cardinals have climbed the MLB standings with a 32-18 record over the past 50 games, the third-best in baseball during that span. St. Louis has performed well with a solid 3.74 ERA, even with several key players on the injured list.
The team’s turnaround was partly due to the depth of the Cardinals’ roster and young players stepping up when given larger roles. Now that St. Louis is back in contention, this depth could play an even more significant role in trade negotiations.
According to Fox Sports’ MLB insider Ken Rosenthal, the Cardinals will be buyers at the MLB trade deadline and will have an added advantage due to their major-league depth.
Catcher Ivan Herrera and outfielder Dylan Carlson are among the potential trade candidates mentioned by Rosenthal. With catcher Willson Contreras regularly in the lineup and 25-year-old Pedro Pages emerging as a reliable backup, Herrera is considered expendable.
Similarly, the impending returns of outfielder Lars Nootbar and utility man Tommy Edman could make Carlson expendable. St. Louis also has some pitching depth, which they could combine with prospects for potential upgrades.
