As the Edmonton Oilers enjoy their offseason, the upcoming season’s roster is starting to take shape. With several strong signings so far, the Oilers appear ready for another deep run towards the Stanley Cup. However, there is still work for the management team to do.
Currently, the Edmonton Oilers are over the salary cap by just over $350,000 and still need to re-sign Dylan Holloway and Philip Broberg. Although these players may not demand large contracts, the Oilers will need to shed some salary, a fact well-known across the league, making a trade to offload cap space a challenging task.
While the Oilers have already traded away Ryan McLeod to create some space, more moves are necessary to become cap compliant. The problem is that other teams are aware of the Oilers’ situation, allowing them to push for an overpayment in any trade.
This could put the Oilers in a difficult position unless a team is genuinely interested in acquiring a player the Oilers are willing to part with. The most likely candidate for a trade is Cody Ceci, who played on the third pairing for most of the playoffs and has a salary of over $3 million. Offloading Ceci’s contract would provide the Oilers with enough room to become cap compliant and re-sign Holloway and Broberg.
