The Boston Bruins have completed their biggest remaining offseason task by re-signing star goalie Jeremy Swayman. The Alaska native, who was a restricted free agent, has now secured the majority of the Bruins’ remaining cap space.
With this deal done, the Bruins turned their attention to adding another winger to their forward depth. With Jake DeBrusk, Danton Heinen, James van Riemsdyk, and Pat Maroon no longer on the roster, the Bruins opted to sign a player to a cheap one-year deal, bringing in veteran forward Mike Hoffman. This move mirrors last season’s successful PTO strategy with Heinen.
The Bruins had previously been connected to Hoffman when he was a free agent in 2020 and at the 2021 NHL Trade Deadline. Bruins GM Don Sweeney has clearly liked him for some time.
Hoffman, coming off a bit of a down season in 2023-24 with the San Jose Sharks, recorded 10 goals and 23 points in 66 games. Despite this dip, he could serve as a solid middle-six option for the Bruins. For instance, in the 2022-23 season with the Montreal Canadiens, he notched 14 goals and 34 points in 67 games.
The Bruins have now signed Hoffman to a cheap one-year deal. This move brings a former top-six forward to the team, providing additional secondary scoring in a third-line role with minimal risk.
