Wrexham have one key position they need to fix before Championship kick-off, it’s the ‘priority’

Wrexham have moved efficiently during the transfer window recently to strengthen their squad ahead of the Championship campaign.

The Red Dragons face Southampton in less than two weeks in their Championship season opener and are really ramping up preparations for the clash.

Phil Parkinson will be keen to make his six new signings feel at home as soon as possible and four potential debuts will be made in the upcoming clash with Groningen.

However, Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney are not finished in the transfer market just yet and Wrexham are willing to spend big on a striker. However, another position needs to be the priority for the Championship new boys.

Wrexham lack Championship experience in defence

Wrexham are prioritising a centre back before the summer transfer window and it is no wonder given the lack of experience in the second tier from their current options.

It is widely expected that Max Cleworth and Lewis Brunt will be on the right and left side of a back three, leaving a spot open at the heart of the defence.

Given that neither Cleworth or Brunt have played a minute of football in the Championship, an experienced head is required.

However, only Dan Scarr has made an appearance at the level of the remaining options for Parkinson and attempts at strengthening the area so far have failed.

A solid defensive record was the foundation for the club’s success last season and the manager will want to have a settled back three once again at the start of this campaign.

Which defenders have Wrexham targeted so far this window?

Wrexham failed in attempts to lure Premier League duo Ben Davies and Aaron Cresswell to the Racecourse Ground. Davies has signed a new deal at Spurs, whilst Cresswell has joined Stoke City.

A contract was offered to Craig Dawson by Wrexham but as of yet the veteran defender has not accepted the deal and remains without a club.

Wrexham are interested in John Egan from divisional rivals Hull City and the Irish international has great experience in the Championship and the Premier League.

It is a position that cannot be neglected by the Red Dragons as they head into the start of the season and a player with a proven track record will be needed given the lack of playing time at this level by Parkinson’s current options.
