Sunderland have reached an agreement with NEC Nijmegen to sign goalkeeper Robin Roefs on a five-year deal, according to The Athletic’s David Ornstein.
It’s been a busy summer transfer window for Sunderland so far as they prepare for their return to the Premier League. Additions were necessary as they plan on trying to avoid the drop, and they haven’t been messing around in the market. Reinildo Mandava, Chemsdine Talbi, Noah Sadiki, Enzo Le Fee, Habib Diarra, and Simon Adingra have all arrived through the door, and they are also closing in on a couple more additions.
The gap between England’s top flight and the Championship has been increasing in recent years. Over the last two seasons, every side who has been promoted from the Championship the campaign before has gone straight back down, so it’s imperative that clubs get their recruitment right if they want to remain in the division.
David Ornstein: Sunderland Reach Agreement for Roefs
He’s set to sign a five-year deal
Reporting for The Athletic, Ornstein has confirmed that Sunderland have reached a £9m agreement to sign goalkeeper Roefs, who is set to undergo a medical on Wednesday before joining the club on a five-year contract. The Black Cats are also closing in on the signing of former Arsenal midfielder Granit Xhaka, with the Swiss international set to join the club from Bundesliga side Bayer Leverkusen.
Sunderland’s current number one is Anthony Patterson, but he’s yet to ply his trade in a top league. At the age of 25, Patterson is still relatively inexperienced, and it will be interesting to see whether Roefs is coming in to be the number one, considering he’s only 22 with one full campaign at senior level under his belt.
Roefs played 32 times for NEC Nijmegen in the Eredivisie during the 2024/2025 season, while he also featured for the Netherlands at the Euro U21 tournament earlier in the summer. It’s been a hectic summer transfer window for Sunderland so far, but they don’t appear to be slowing down as they attempt to build a squad capable of remaining in the Premier League.
