Alex de Minaur breaks new ground in Australian men’s tennis history at the US Open.
Tennis star Alex de Minaur has accomplished something that no Australian male player has achieved on the court in over twenty years.
Alex de Minaur has reached the fourth round of the US Open and made his mark in the record books. The Australian initially faced a tough challenge from Britain’s Dan Evans but ultimately secured a straightforward 6-3, 6-7 (4-7), 6-0, 6-0 win on Sunday (AEST).
Evans called for the trainer several times as he struggled with a hip issue that greatly affected his mobility on the court. De Minaur took full advantage, forcing Evans to move side to side throughout the final two sets.
As the match progressed, the crowd began to boo Evans, prompting De Minaur to gesture for silence. After the match, De Minaur praised Evans for his resilience despite his injuries, urging the crowd to acknowledge his effort.
“We should all show a lot of respect for Dan. He’s a fierce competitor. He could have easily withdrawn, but he stayed and gave his best despite being in discomfort, so I really appreciate it,” De Minaur said.
“We’ve had some intense matches before, and he’s beaten me many times, so I’m pleased to have finally come out on top.”
