Houston Astros vs. Arizona Diamondbacks: MLB Picks and Prediction for 9-8-24

The Arizona Diamondbacks and the Houston Astros meet Sunday in MLB action from Minute Maid Park. Here’s a Houston Astros vs Arizona Diamondbacks prediction. This will be the final installment in a three-game series. We will look at this from a betting perspective and determine the best Astros vs Diamondbacks pick.

Arizona Diamondbacks Betting Preview

In their early-week series the Diamondbacks took on the San Francisco Giants. Arizona won two of those three games, taking a Thursday loss 3-2. In the opener versus Houston on Friday, the Diamondbacks took another defeat 8-0. On Saturday Arizona took an 11-5 loss. Starter Eduardo Rodriguez finished with 4.0 innings and four earned runs.

In the starter role for the Diamondbacks on Sunday it’ll be Ryne Nelson. So far Nelson is 10-6 with a 4.15 ERA in 26 games (24 starts). Nelson is 19-15 with a 4.54 ERA in 58 career games (54 starts).

Houston Astros Betting Preview

Over on the Astros’ side, they played the Cincinnati Reds in their last series. Houston lost all three of those games in a sweep. In Saturday’s matchup the Astros posted 13 team hits and five runs in the sixth inning alone.

It’ll be Justin Verlander in the start for the Astros on Sunday. This year Verlander is 3-5 with a 4.52 ERA in 13 starts. Verlander is 260-146 with a 3.27 ERA in 522 career starts.

Houston Astros vs Arizona Diamondbacks Prediction

I’ll try the Diamondbacks in this one. Probably not touching it in reality, though. Nelson has been pretty steady over his last three starts. He’s 2-0 in that trio with six earned runs in 19.0 total innings. As for Verlander, he’s been struggling with 11 earned runs over 14.2 innings in his last three starts, resulting in an 0-3 run.

On Saturday the Diamondbacks didn’t have too bad of a night offensively with 10 team hits. Arizona had a couple of rough pitching performances though, as Rodriguez and Dylan Floro combined for nine earned runs. The Diamondbacks will need quite the turnaround Sunday
