Chelsea’s pursuit of Xavi Simons has taken a knock today following reports that a Premier League rival has entered the running for the player’s signature.

The Blues have been in talks for the RB Leipzig forward since late July as Enzo Maresca looks to add yet another attacking option to his star-studded squad.

Liam Delap, Joao Pedro and Jamie Gittens have already been signed as attackers by Chelsea this summer at a cost of up to £142million, with Brazilian wonderkid Estevao also joining up.

But Simons is still considered a necessary addition, and the player is thought to be keen on a move to west London, though club-to-club negotiations have proven more complex.

Standard Sport understands a swap deal involving Christopher Nkunku has been explored, with the Frenchman open to a move back to his former club, though Leipzig are not convinced by the offer.

Reports from Sky Germany say they do not want to take the player back on a permanent move, and would only consider a loan.
