Newcastle United hit bump in Yoane Wissa deal after talks reach advanced stages

Newcastle United are hoping to secure the signature of Brentford forward Yoane Wissa, who is ready to travel to Tyneside for a medical.

Having released Callum Wilson in July, and Alexander Isak refusing to train with the first team, the Magpies need to sign at least one new striker this summer.

As it stands, William Osula could be leading the line for Newcastle United in their first Premier League game of the season against Aston Villa, something no fan could have predicted before the transfer window opened.

However, Newcastle are in advanced talks with Yoane Wissa, who has made it clear that he only wants to join Eddie Howe’s side this summer. Talks have ramped up over the last few days, with Wissa’s representatives in England to help push the deal forward.

Wissa even rejected an approach from Liverpool for Newcastle. The 28-year-old is believed to be desperate to play in the Champions League and thinks Newcastle is the right move for him.

With the deal sure to get over the line, the Magpies have been dealt a significant blow from elsewhere.

Brentford are struggling to sign their Yoane Wissa replacement

Newcastle are hopeful of Wissa signing this week, but circumstances elsewhere appear to have put the deal on pause for now.

Reports last week stated that Brentford were in talks to sign Bournemouth’s Dango Ouattara as their replacement for Wissa. Unfortunately, those talks have stalled.

According to Sky Sports reporter Mark McAdam, Brentford’s deal for Ouattara cannot go any further until Bournemouth sign a replacement. There was word that Amine Adli was on the Cherries’ radar, but their interest has since cooled.

Ouattara is still keen on the move to West London, but it is clear that progress must happen at Bournemouth before he can leave.

Brentford begin talks with another striker after Dango Ouattara blow

While one door begins to close, another opens; there is hope that Wissa can still sign before Newcastle’s game against Aston Villa on Saturday.

Malick Thiaw is set to feature for Newcastle, but time is running out for Wissa to be involved.

Thankfully for Newcastle, it has been confirmed that Brentford are now working on a deal for Rennes striker Arnaud Kalimuendo. The Frenchman enjoyed a brilliant 2024/25 campaign, scoring 17 goals, and it now looks like he could be Premier League-bound.

Telegraph journalist Mike McGrath stated that the Bees are in talks with the 23-year-old, who has caught the eye of Keith Andrews.

Kalimuendo was linked to Newcastle in 2022, but ultimately joined Rennes from Lens.
