Arsenal Youngster Shocks Fans by Rejecting First International Call-Up Amid Three-Nation Tug of War

Arsenal winger Charles Sagoe Jr. has reportedly turned down the chance to make his senior international debut for Liberia, opting instead to delay his decision on which nation he’ll represent at the international level.

The 21-year-old talent — widely considered one of Arsenal’s brightest academy products — remains eligible for EnglandGhana, and Liberia through family heritage. Liberia had hoped to include Sagoe Jr. in their squad for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Equatorial Guinea and Namibia, seeing him as a potential game-changer for their attack.

However, according to sources close to the Liberia Football Association, the young Gunner respectfully declined the invitation, expressing his wish to “focus on club football” before committing his international future.

Liberia’s disappointment is understandable — Sagoe Jr. would have been a marquee addition alongside Tranmere Rovers’ Nohan Kenneh, currently the only Liberian international active in English football.

Instead, the winger is laser-focused on climbing Mikel Arteta’s pecking order at Arsenal. After signing a new contract in August 2024, keeping him at the Emirates until 2027, Sagoe Jr. has made it clear his priority lies with establishing himself in North London.

His performances for the Under-21s have only reinforced his rising stock. Following his first-team debut in Arsenal’s 1–0 Carabao Cup win over Brentford in 2023, Sagoe Jr. has been electric in the EFL Trophy, bagging three goals and several assists across key fixtures against Newport County, Nottingham Forest, Brighton, Fulham, and Derby County.
