Aaron Ramsdale’s Southampton transfer saga nears end with Newcastle United ‘in talks’, but there’s a catch

Southampton appointed Will Still earlier in the summer to spearhead the Saints’ season back in the Championship.

So far in the summer transfer window, the Southampton headlines have been centred around high-profile departures, which could lead to a potential St Mary’s exodus.

Veteran full-back Kyle Walker-Peters left Southampton to become a Premier League free agent this summer, with attackers Kamaldeen Sulemana and Paul Onuachu also exiting the South Coast outfit.

In a further transfer blow for Still, another Southampton star is now poised for an exit to Premier League giants Newcastle United.

Newcastle United are ‘in talks’ to sign Southampton goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale

The future of Southampton goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale has been up in the air since the Saints suffered relegation from the top flight last season.

Ramsdale, who conceded 66 goals in 30 Premier League games for Southampton last term, has been the subject of rife transfer interest throughout the summer window.

It seemed inevitable that Ramsdale was likely to be sold by Southampton this summer, given that the English international tops the highest-paid Championship players list, and Ramsdale’s intent to keep his Three Lions hopes alive by continuing in the top flight.

Rangers and Galatasaray registered interest in Ramsdale last month for a loan move, with Bournemouth and Newcastle also monitoring his situation. Now, it appears that the Magpies have won the race to sign the Saints shot-stopper.

Sky Sports News reporter Keith Downie revealed on X: “Aaron Ramsdale is in talks to sign for Newcastle.

“The England international played under Eddie Howe at Bournemouth and NUFC were interested in signing him last summer.

“NUFC missed out on James Trafford, who is moving to Man City instead, and have turned to Ramsdale.”

Reporter David Ornstein added via The Athletic: “Newcastle have made an offer for an initial loan with an option to buy. Southampton would consider a straight sale, a loan move with a significant loan fee and purchase price, or Ramsdale remaining at the club next season.”

The element of the deal being an “initial loan with an option to buy” would appear to be a drawback for Southampton, as Still and the St Mary’s transfer team will not benefit from the funds initially, which could have been used in the ongoing summer transfer window.

If Ramsdale’s departure was as simple as a permanent exit, then the Saints hierarchy could spend those sizeable funds as soon as possible, which would have proven more beneficial now in the task of recruiting a replacement, than in 12 months’ time.

Ramsdale’s departure will leave Still either searching for a new number one at Southampton or placing his trust in number two Gavin Bazunu for the 2025/26 Championship season, which history would indicate could be a risky move.

Will Still must sign a new goalkeeper at Southampton after Aaron Ramsdale joins Newcastle

With Ramsdale now set to join the Magpies, and reunite with former Cherries boss Howe, Still is tasked with searching for a new first-choice goalkeeper.

Last season, former Saints number one Bazunu was sent out on loan to Belgian top flight side Standard Liege, with the Republic of Ireland international deemed surplus to requirements with Ramsdale in goal.

Bazunu conceded 15 goals and kept one clean sheet in just 8 outings for Liege, in another difficult season for the 23-year-old.

Statistic Aaron Ramsdale in 24/25 (league only) Gavin Bazunu in 24/25 (league only)
Games played 30 8
Goals conceded 66 15
Clean sheets 3 1
Shots faced 192 33

In Southampton’s 2022/23 Premier League campaign, Bazunu conceded 56 goals and kept just four clean sheets in 32 top flight appearances as the Saints suffered relegation to the Championship.

Bazunu’s record over recent seasons between the sticks is less than inspiring, and it will not fill Still with confidence going into his maiden Southampton season in charge.

Stoke City goalkeeper Viktor Johansson would be an option for Southampton to fill the void left by Ramsdale’s imminent move to Newcastle, which has left Still with another headache this summer.
