Aston Villa could make a shock move for Werder Bremen star Romano Schmid, according to The Guardian – with the club ‘monitoring’ the midfielder as Unai Emery looks to bolster his ranks in the west Midlands ahead of what will undoubtedly be another tense and testing season for the Spaniard.
Villa will feature in the Europa League after coming sixth in the Premier League last season, which makes them an enticing option for players to join in the summer. And, with various departures potentially in their midfield ranks, that could entice the Villans to move for Schmid to bolster their ranks ahead of a gruelling campaign.

The Villans have joined in the market for the Austrian
The report by The Guardian journalist Jacob Steinberg states that Villa are considering a move for the Bundesliga midfielder, with Schmid having been compared to world superstar Lionel Messi in the past.

The Austria international could be available for a fee of around €15million (£13million) this summer, having joined Bremen back in 2019 from RB Salzburg, featuring in five full campaigns for the club, including last season’s career-best of five goals in 32 games in the Bundesliga for the Weserstadion outfit.
The deal is not at an advanced stage just yet, whilst West Ham United and Fulham are monitoring the 25-year-old to potentially come into their ranks – but Villa are keen on midfield additions and Schmid could be on the cards if they can stump up the fee.
Villa already have John McGinn, Youri Tielemans, Amadou Onana and Boubacar Kamara in the central midfield positions – but with Jacob Ramsey, Ross Barkley and Emi Buendia being touted for moves away from the club, that would leave just Morgan Rogers as their only option in attacking midfield should the trio depart.
Marco Asensio came in on loan last season from Paris Saint-Germain, and largely impressed as Villa competed for a Champions League spot all the way until the final day, as well as reaching the quarter-finals of the competition. But with the Spaniard unlikely to return to Villa Park, there is a creative void and that could be filled by Schmid after some stellar seasons in Germany.
